The new Dual Screen to get: Retroid Pocket Duo
Regular Pocket Duo review against the AYN Thor, covering screens, controls, setup, GameNative, Wii U, 3DS, DS and Switch emulation. Tested on a review unit Retroid sent after cancelling the reviewer's retail order. Watch the full video on YouTube ↗

Settings and findings
What the reviewer found in this video at the time. Newer app versions can behave differently.
Super Mario 3D World reaches full frame rate in the SapphireRhodonite Cemu fork with Turnip Duo, which WULFF DEN says increases performance significantly. Super Mario Maker also plays fine, and results vary by game.

More detail
- The on-screen label and the repository page shown name the SapphireRhodonite fork; the release used is not shown.
Star Fox Zero does not run, and WULFF DEN says it has never run on the Android version of Cemu.
More detail
- The reviewer has heard that Windows Cemu through GameNative runs it, but did not try it.
Pilotwings Resort and Kirby: Planet Robobot run close to full speed in Azahar, with occasional hiccups while shaders compile. The MrPurple and Turnip Duo drivers give similar performance, and the only change needed was a single large top-screen layout.

SeedlessDS needs almost no setup. Games first load a little small on the top screen, and WULFF DEN found the fill height setting fixed that, while noting they think that is the right option.
Rhythm Heaven plays fine with finger touch on the large capacitive lower screen, and WULFF DEN notices no real input latency.
Ball x Pit, Hollow Knight: Silksong and Hades II run in GameNative at a consistent 50 fps or so, with no setup time. WULFF DEN estimates that at about 10 fps below what the Thor would manage.

Neon White does not open and Skyrim runs very badly in GameNative with the MrPurple driver.

Turnip Duo v5.1 inverted the colours in GameNative at the time of testing. It raised performance slightly and got Neon White to open, but the game stayed too slow for WULFF DEN to want to play it.

More detail
- The version comes from an on-screen label.
Super Mario Odyssey runs at about 40 fps in Eden, which WULFF DEN calls slow. Switch is the one emulated system the review does not call full speed.
More detail
- The reviewer expects lower resolution and other settings could help. The video does not say whether this is the Eden Duo build.
WULFF DEN says Dolphin runs great for GameCube and ARMSX2 runs great for PS2, and suggests RetroArch for systems older than GameCube.
More detail
- No games or settings are named.
WULFF DEN recommends leaving the Duo in 60 Hz mode because little will play at 120 Hz, it saves battery and power, and games can tear at 120 Hz when frame rates vary a lot.
Black frame insertion in RetroArch flickers too much for WULFF DEN, slightly less so on the top screen.
Accidentally touching the lower screen moves controls away from the game. WULFF DEN recommends the screen lock button when using one screen; it leaves the screen on and prevents the swap.
In high performance mode with the fan on smart, WULFF DEN never heard the fan during testing, and calls the speakers much better.
Double-tapping the home button opens the quick menu with a frame rate counter and other settings, which WULFF DEN says they would not have found without a tip from their chat.
WULFF DEN finds the D-pad awesome, the triggers a decent improvement on the Thor and the buttons typical for Retroid. The low stick position needs a lower grip, so they suggest the Thor for mostly 3D play.
WULFF DEN found the first-boot emulator downloads a little old and suggests skipping them and Retroid's launcher in favour of current emulators; most then worked with minimal tweaking.
WULFF DEN likes Cocoon as the easiest launcher to set up, while saying a launcher is optional and they still often open emulators directly.
Android took about 30 GB of the 128 GB internal storage on this unit, leaving 98 GB, so WULFF DEN felt a microSD card was needed.
WULFF DEN wanted to test a retail unit, but says Retroid cancelled their order and sent a free review unit without asking, so this review is based on that unit.
More detail
- WULFF DEN also says earlier Retroid review units have differed from retail units, and advises early buyers to tread lightly. No difference on this unit is reported.
